Dr. Mohammad Shariful Islam

Dr. Mohammad Shariful Islam is currently working as a Professor at the Department of Civil Engineering. Dr. Islam obtained his PhD in Earthquake Engineering from Saitama University, Japan in 2002. He also persuaded JSPS post-doctoral research at Saitama University during November 2005 to November 2007. His research interest includes bio-engineering, climate resilient infrastructure, disaster resilient rural housing, land reclamation, constitutive modeling of soils, earthquake resistant foundation and liquefaction. Dr. Islam has made significant contribution in the field of vetiver based bio-engineering methods. He developed nature-based, climate resilient and cost-effective methods for slope protection based on his long term research outcomes and field trials. These has been implemented in different projects of Bangladesh by LGED, RHD, ECB, CCC, BWDB, IOM, IFAD-UN, UNDP, NGOs/INGOs and private entities for the protection of road slope, canal bank, flood embankment, char land (small river island), village island and killa (raised land), hill slope and earth wall. He has co-authored the Design Manual ‘Disaster Resilient Affordable House Design for Different Geographic Regions of Bangladesh’ published by Department of Civil Engineering, BUET. This manual contains 35 designs of affordable rural houses for 8 different geographic regions of Bangladesh which are useful for individuals, relevant Government Departments and NGOs. His research has been covered by many local & international print and electronic media. Dr. Islam has published more than 100 research papers in reputed journals, conferences and seminars. He has made more than 25 keynote/invited lectures in home and abroad. He has also supervised/examined 45 local and international postgraduate researches. Dr. Islam received a number of awards in recognition of his excellence in academic achievements, teaching and researches. These include Dr. Rashid Gold Medal, Sharfuddin Gold Medal and Dean’s Award for academic excellence as a civil engineering student at BUET. Dr. Islam is contributing in national development working as a Member, Panel of Expert or Consultants in different important projects of the country. He is conducting collaborative research with many universities, industries and organizations of home and abroad.

Consultation Services

As a Consulting Geotechnical Engineer, Member of Expert Committee and Advisor, Dr. Islam has been involved in design & vetting, material modelling, material testing, in-situ tests, site investigations, quality control, health monitoring and forensic/post failure investigation since 2002.
