Dr. Khan Mahmud Amanat

Dr. Khan Mahmud Amanat is working as a Professor of Department of Civil Engineering, Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology (BUET). He received BSc degree in civil engineering in 1991 from BUET and since then serving as a faculty member. He obtained his MSc in Structural Engineering in 1993 from BUET and PhD in 1997 from Nagoya University, Japan. He also received post-doctoral fellowships from DFID and The British Council as well as from the prestigious Association of Commonwealth Universities to do research in the UK and Canada. As an engineering academician, Dr. Amanat specializes in structural engineering and has been engaged in teaching, research and professional activities in this field since 1991.

Research Interest

  • In his 3-decade long career as an academician, Dr. Amanat published a text book and several technical research articles on concrete and steel in many international journals, some of which also received best paper awards. He supervised several masters and PhD researches. Dr. Amanat is very active in developing and modernizing the civil engineering curricula of BUET. His current research interests include behavior of steel slit dampers and shear links under cyclic loading, optimized design of post-tensioned PC-girders, soft-storied buildings, repair and retrofitting using CFRP laminates, behavior of bolted flanged connection subjected to bending, replaceable steel coupling beam, recycled brick concrete aggregate, estimation of in-situ strength of brick concrete columns, behavior of engineered cementitious composite made of locally available materials etc.Dr. Amanat is also contributing to the development of the nation through consultancy and advisory services. He had been actively involved in updating and developing the Bangladesh National Building Code. He acted as a consultant or expert in a number of important national mega projects like the Padma Bridge Project, repair of Jamuna Bridge, Meghna Bridge, design of bridges and flyovers etc. As an expert academician he served as the Chairman of the Civil Engineering Division of the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institute (BSTI) as well as a member of various committees formed by the govt. As an experienced academician and professional, he also conducted several seminars and workshops at home and abroad.

  • Association of Commonwealth Universities Fellowship 2012 – Post doctoral fellowship for research in the University of British Columbia, Okanagan Campus, Canada.
  • IEB Award for the Best Paper 2003, The Institution of Engineers Bangladesh.

  • IEB Award for the Best Paper 2001, The Institution of Engineers Bangladesh
  • British Govt. (DFID and The British Council) Fellowship in 2002 to conduct research in UK under a higher education link program between BUET and University of Exeter.
  • Monbusho Scholarship from Japan Govt. in 1994 to pursue PhD in Japan.

About the book

The book is all about reinforcing materials. It consists of ten well-outlined chapters covering nearly 300 pages with 187 color illustrations and photographs. The reader will learn about the essential physical, mechanical and engineering properties of various reinforcing materials, interpreting test reports, seismic applications and limitations etc. The reader will also find an in-depth discussion of the usage of couplers and other splicing methods, the basic and essential information on epoxy or zinc-coated rebar, rebar   made of special types of material such as stainless steel as well as non-metallic materials such as CFRP and GFRP. Civil engineering students, teachers, professionals, project owners—all are likely to find something interesting in this book. It is an all-in-one text and a reference book on concrete reinforcing materials.
