Dr. Tahmeed Malik Al-Hussaini

Dr. Tahmeed M. Al-Hussaini did his Ph.D. at State University of New York at Buffalo, where he was involved in NSF and NCEER funded research projects dealing with wave barriers for reduction of ground vibration and seismic response of base-isolated structures. His Ph.D. was followed by professional engagement at Earthquake Protection Systems, San Francisco, USA. His research experience includes shake table testing of base isolated 7 story building models at the National Centre for Earthquake Engineering Research (NCEER), State University of New York at Buffalo and testing of full-size seismic isolation bearings (Friction Pendulum Bearings) at the Earthquake Engineering Research Centre (EERC), University of California at Berkeley, USA. His research work on base-isolated multi-storied buildings at NCEER has been cited in the FEMA 356 Report (2000) on “Prestandard and Commentary for the Seismic Rehabilitation of Buildings”.
Dr. Al-Hussaini started his teaching career at BUET in 1994, where he became a professor of civil engineering in 2007. During 1998 to 2000, he undertook specialized training on Seismology and Seismic Hazard Assessment in China and Italy. He was a visiting research scientist at Ecole Centrale Paris in France during 2001 and 2002 for the European project “Control of Vibrations from Underground Railway Traffic (CONVURT)”. In 2002, Dr. Al-Hussaini proposed the formation of National Centre for Earthquake Engineering (NCEE) at BUET, which finally resulted in a USAID financed link project between NCEE, BUET and Virginia Tech. In 2006, he was a visiting Associate at the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Italy. Dr. Al-Hussaini served as the Director for the newly established BUET-Japan Institute for Disaster Prevention & Urban Safety during 2013 to 2017, during which internal construction and installation of dynamic testing facilities including 3m x 3m servo-hydro shake table, actuators, cyclic triaxial machine were done. He has also been leading a collaborative research program between BUET and University of Trieste Italy on neo-deterministic seismic hazard assessment for Bangladesh. For more than 40 years, he has been involved in teaching, research and consultancy in geotechnical, structural and earthquake engineering in Bangladesh, USA, France, Italy and Thailand.
Dr. Al-Hussaini has been active in various professional organizations. He is a member of Bangladesh Society for Geotechnical Engineering (BSGE) and Fellow of Institution of Engineers Bangladesh (IEB). He has been a founder member and former vice-president of Bangladesh Earthquake Society (BES) founded in 2002, where he has been actively involved in various BES activities, including organizing of international earthquake symposiums in Bangladesh, launching of BES website, BES Newsletter, seminars etc. He visited earthquake affected areas following local earthquakes in Bangladesh and following 2015 earthquake in Kathmandu, Nepal. He was the principal organizer of three international conferences at BUET, 1st Bangladesh Earthquake Symposium 2005, 3rd International Earthquake Symposium Bangladesh 2010 and International Conference on Disaster Risk Mitigation 2017. He acted as a Member, TC4 Committee for Earthquake Geotechnical Engineering and Associated Problems, International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE) during 2006-2009. He is a member of the Joint Working Group on Neo-Deterministic Seismic Hazard Assessment (JWG NDSHA). He has participated in many conferences, workshops, meetings and seminars at home and abroad related to earthquake engineering, seismology and disaster mitigation.

Professional Work at National and International Levels
Dr. Al-Hussaini has been involved in various consultancy projects related to seismic isolation applications, seismic instrumentation, seismic hazard assessment, liquefaction studies, geotechnical/foundation investigations, soil improvement, slope stability, post-disaster shelter evaluation, building code revisions, rapid building vulnerability assessment etc. Following graduation in 1984, as design engineer at Shaheedullah and Associates Ltd., Dhaka, he gained experience in structural analysis and design of steel and reinforced concrete structures for industrial factory and warehouse. Working with Earthquake Protection Systems of USA, in addition to research work, he gained experience in major seismic isolation projects where earthquake protection devices have been used for protection of civil engineering structures. He also gained experience in quality assurance testing of seismic isolation bearings. Working briefly with Geotechnology of USA, he gained experience in supervision and reporting of subsurface exploration works including drilling through rocks, as well as dynamic pile driving analysis. Since joining BUET as faculty member in 1994, in addition to academic and administrative responsibilities, he has been involved in various testing and consultancy tasks through BRTC, BUET. Dr. Al-Hussaini had the major role in the planning and design of the digital seismic instrumentation project for Jamuna Bridge in 2003. He was involved as a technical expert member in the national committee for the establishment of modern seismological observatories project under the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), Govt. of Bangladesh during 2005 to 2008. Dr. Al-Hussaini led a two-member team which in 2010 submitted new earthquake engineering design provisions including a new seismic zoning map which has been finally included in the latest version of Bangladesh national building code (BNBC-2020). He has been involved in seismic hazard assessment studies for major projects of national importance such as Karnaphuli River Tunnel, Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, Jamuna Railway Bridge and Padma Bridge projects. He was an expert member of the Bangladesh government team to visit the HIRUN Bearing Manufacture facility in Wuhan China in 2017 for inspection and approval of the testing facilty for testing of Friction Pendulum Bearings used for the earthquake protection of Padma Bridge.
